How we use AI
AI helps us work faster. A human editor decides what is published.
What AI does
- Monitors official and public sources for new Vancouver information.
- Extracts facts (who, what, when, where, numbers, quotes) from those sources.
- Drafts an original story from those facts, with sources attached.
- Checks the draft against its sources for unsupported claims, checks it is not copied from a source, and flags legal or sensitive issues.
What AI does not do
- It does not publish anything. Every story is approved by a human editor.
- It does not decide what is true. Facts must come from identified sources.
- Stories with elevated risk — such as criminal allegations or private individuals — cannot be approved with one click; they require full editorial review.
Images
If we ever use an AI-generated image, it is labelled “AI-generated illustration” and is not used to depict a real event.
Accountability
NORTHLINE is responsible for everything we publish, regardless of the tools used. Errors are handled under our corrections policy.
