VPD deploys about 80 extra officers across Vancouver for Halloween weekend

Foot patrols, traffic enforcement and youth engagement are on the extra officers' list. Police also reminded costume-wearers that imitation weapons can bring a significant response.

The Vancouver Police Department is deploying approximately 80 additional officers throughout the city for Halloween weekend, with foot patrols, traffic enforcement and youth engagement among their assignments.

The VPD said it expects increased activity in the Granville Entertainment District, Gastown and neighbourhoods across the city. For anyone heading out to a party, a bar or a trick-or-treating route, that means more officers on the ground and on the roads over the weekend.

Besides foot patrols and traffic enforcement, the extra officers will be assigned to youth engagement and what police call proactive policing. They will work alongside community partners and emergency services.

Constable Megan Lui said the department wants people to enjoy the holiday. "We’re happy to see people get out and enjoy Halloween festivities, and we want everyone to have a good time," she said.

Lui asked people to celebrate responsibly and look out for one another. Anyone who witnesses a crime in progress, suspicious activity or a situation that puts someone's safety at risk should call 9-1-1 immediately, she said.

Police also reminded the public that imitation firearms and replica weapons can create fear, prompt emergency calls and may lead to a significant police response. The VPD encouraged people to avoid carrying imitation weapons as part of a costume and to consider accessories that do not resemble real weapons.
